Sustrans is the UK’s leading sustainable travel charity — working to make smarter travel choices possible, desirable and inevitable. By teaming up with the travel industry’s big players and policy makers, as well as communities and families at local level, they help empower people to make cleaner, healthier journeys every day.

Just as Sustrans help people travel more effectively, the charity needed us to make their message travel as far and wide as possible. This meant creating an annual report that presented what they do in a simple, visually engaging way. A communication that moved their communications from that of a council-run organisation to a modern charity with real human benefit.

Annual reports can often be dry, conventional communications, designed with the purpose of ticking the bureaucracy box. But we believe they have the capacity to really immerse people in what you do.

We embraced this philosophy for Sustrans, creating a short, compact annual report that could be read in the space of a bus journey.

The most impactful publications rarely play it safe. So we took a bold approach to design — injecting a single vibrant colour through each double page spread, and using scaled typography and vector illustrations to pull out the charity’s key achievements.

And we kept everything really clean and stripped back – reflecting the simplicity of sustainable travel, and the solutions Sustrans come up with.
